The K2 Powder Ride is based on the compact X1 crossover, and it’s nothing if not distinctive.
It sports a Valencia Orange paintjob, and the kind of exterior graphics you’ll find on K2-branded skis.
The 19-inch wheels are ferric gray and match the lower body kit
(complete with front and rear sills, as well as side skirts).
The windows are tinted
— all the better to block out light reflected from snow-covered ground — and the window surrounds and roof rails are a matching shade of matte black. Atop those roof rails are two luggage racks, painted either blue or orange.
The Concept K2 Powder Ride doesn’t boast any more horsepower or any mechanical upgrades over a stock BMW X1, but BMW does say that it increased suspension travel at all four corners by some 0.3 inches. The only increased power we can find is in the audio system. The concept has a set of two-way loudspeakers (combined output: 320 watts), a 2 x 550-watt amplifier, and a 500-watt subwoofer on board, as well as an AKG microphone — all the more useful for tailgates, mountaintop parties, and the like.
On the inside, there’s heapings of black leather with orange contrast stitching, and dark wood trim with the orange K2 logo emblazoned on it. The black and orange floor mats, naturally, match the seats.
While the Concept K2 Powder Ride is just a concept at this point (one headed to the Los Angeles Auto Show this fall), BMW says it intends to launch a limited-edition X1 with some similar features. The BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition will go on sale around the same time as the Concept K2 Powder Ride takes the stage in L.A., and will be sold in limited quantities in the U.S.
The Powder Ride Edition, which is available on BMW X1 xDrive28i and xDrive35i models, is available in most any color available on the X1 (black and white non-metallic, orange, white, gray, silver, and black metallic), and sports a special X logo on the doors and wheel arches, which was designed to look like the K2 graphics on the concept. The Powder Ride Edition has matte silver 18-inch wheels, which match the trim on the door sills. Interior trim is copper colored, and the package includes a leather steering wheel, leather/fabric seats, and special ambient lighting. Buyers who opt for the Powder Ride Edition will also get a ski/snowboard bag, special floor/luggage compartment mats, a roof box, and a set of special-edition K2 skis.
Pricing for the BMW X1 Powder Ride Edition hasn’t yet been announced, but we’ll see the Concept K2 Powder Ride on stage this November in Los Angeles.
